On February 21, 2020, Montreal Holley — a 28-year-old Regions Bank branch manager in Montgomery, Alabama — was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty in November 2019 to one federal count of theft of funds by a bank employee, following an investigation opened jointly by Regions Bank and the U.S. Secret Service in December 2018. Holley had assumed his position as branch manager in May 2018 and within months had identified an elderly customer as his target, persuading her that she could trust only him to manage her finances before systematically draining her accounts through cashier's checks, wire transfers, and a debit card he issued on her account for personal ATM withdrawals. Over the course of months, Holley took $313,448.83 in total, including a single $188,000 wire he routed directly into his own account at a separate bank, using the proceeds to pay off personal loans for himself, his wife, and his girlfriend, including $23,266 applied to a car loan for a vehicle his girlfriend was driving. He later falsely told investigators the victim had authorized that transfer. The investigation was triggered when Regions flagged the $188,000 wire internally. The elderly victim died shortly after the probe began, never learning that Holley was sentenced to federal prison or that the Middle District of Alabama ordered full restitution for the balance he had not yet returned.
