On August 29, 2026, Trooper Thomas was stationary on I-40 near the 282 mile marker when he observed a black Nissan Versa with Arkansas license plates traveling at 83 mph. When Trooper Thomas attempted to initiate a traffic stop near Exit 280 to West Memphis, the driver refused to stop and fled southbound on MLK Drive toward I-55 Travel, reaching speeds over 80 mph while swerving through traffic. The pursuit continued onto Broadway through a residential area with a posted 35-30 mph limit. The vehicle ran the red light at Broadway and Walker. Due to the driver's continued disregard for public safety, Trooper Thomas attempted a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) near Broadway and 20th Street, and again at 14th Street. Both were unsuccessful due to heavy pedestrian traffic. A final, successful TVI was performed at Broadway and 8th Street, causing the vehicle to come to rest in a parking area. The driver, identified as James Gregory, exited the vehicle and fled on foot westbound. He was apprehended with the assistance of Trooper Fultz and his K-9 partner. After being taken into custody, Gregory displayed signs of intoxication and was transported to Crittenden Baptist Hospital after injuring himself in the patrol vehicle. Charges include: Fleeing, Reckless Driving, Failure to Obey Stop Sign, and Passing Authorized Vehicle.
