This video shows real CCTV footage and real police body-worn video (bodycam footage) of shoplifting offences recorded across London. The footage is published to raise awareness of the impact of retail crime on staff, businesses and communities. The Metropolitan Police is working with retailers, businesses and communities to tackle shoplifting, retail crime and repeat offenders who steal from shops across the capital. From high streets and shopping centres to supermarkets and convenience stores, officers are targeting prolific shoplifters responsible for thousands of thefts. What may seem like a low-level offence can often be linked to wider criminality, repeat offending and significant financial losses for businesses. New analysis by the Metropolitan Police shows that a relatively small number of highly prolific offenders are responsible for a disproportionate amount of retail crime. Just 104 individuals were linked to more than 4,300 shoplifting offences across London over two years, demonstrating the scale of repeat offending. The Met is working closely with retailers to identify suspects, gather evidence and build stronger cases. Improved intelligence sharing, CCTV evidence and new technology are helping officers identify offenders more quickly and bring them to justice. Where retailers provide strong CCTV and witness evidence, police have achieved high identification rates for unknown suspects. There has already been significant progress. Across London, shoplifting offences have fallen by 3.7%, arrests have increased by almost 50%, and the number of offences resulting in positive outcomes has more than doubled. This video has been published to raise awareness of the impact of shoplifting, support victims of retail crime, and demonstrate the work being carried out by the Metropolitan Police to reduce crime, protect businesses and make London safer.
