A teacher's alleged impairment leads to a tense roadside encounter, revealing a struggle with compliance and emotional distress. An officer working an extra detail in a church parking lot was alerted by staff from a nearby school about a potentially impaired teacher driving a silver 2015 Hyundai. The vehicle was observed driving slowly towards a landscaping trailer, prompting the officer to initiate a traffic stop. Upon contact, the driver, who appeared visibly distressed and claimed to be experiencing a panic attack, also exhibited clear indicators of impairment, prompting the call for specialized backup to handle the driving under the influence investigation. As additional officers arrived, the situation intensified when the driver, described as having watery, red eyes and a flushed nose, initially hesitated and then refused to exit her vehicle for field sobriety exercises, despite repeatedly stating she would be cooperative. Officers patiently explained the legal requirements for her to step out of the car for custodial questioning, emphasizing her 5th Amendment rights while reiterating the necessity for compliance. After eventually complying, she performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand, displaying significant difficulty with balance and instruction adherence. Based on her erratic driving and inability to adequately perform the exercises, she was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. A subsequent search of her vehicle incident to arrest uncovered six bottles of vodka. While initially refusing to provide breath samples, she later agreed, and tests at the police department revealed BAC levels of 0.311% and 0.305%, nearly four times the legal limit of 0.08%. She was subsequently cited for DUI and transported to the Pinellas County Jail. --- Transparency through the lens of the law. Subscribe for more real bodycam breakdowns and on-the-street encounters.
