On September 3, 2026, an extraordinary incident unfolded at the Port Orange Police Department in Florida. At approximately 8:30 a.m., 71-year-old Linda Jean Croteau entered the police department's main lobby carrying a handgun. Inside the building, civilian employees were working at the front records counter. Croteau pointed her handgun toward employees before firing a shot in the direction of the department's evidence section. But the situation was far from over. After firing inside the station, Croteau walked outside toward the parking lot, where responding police officers were waiting. Officers repeatedly commanded her to drop her firearm. When she continued approaching while armed, officers opened fire. After initially dropping the weapon, Croteau was seen reaching for it again while officers ordered her to surrender. Additional shots were fired. Officers immediately approached and provided emergency medical assistance. Croteau was transported to a nearby hospital but died from her injuries the following day. Fortunately, no police officers or civilian employees were injured during the incident. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement launched an investigation into the shooting.
