On August 10, 2025, Las Cruces Police Officer Valenzuela stopped a Mercedes Benz SUV for speeding and following too close. The vehicle was being driven by a 24-year-old woman. The police report indicates that Officer Valenzuela could smell the odor of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle. After Officer Valenzuela noticed open containers of alcohol inside the car, he asked the woman to step out of her vehicle. She initially denied consuming alcohol, but later admitted to consuming four cans of Twisted Tea earlier in the day. She was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests and was later placed under arrest. She refused to provide breath samples, as required by New Mexico law. She was charged with (1) Aggravated Driving While Under the Influence (DWI) of Liquor; (2) Speeding; and (3) Following Too Closely. On May 28, 2026, she pleaded no contest to an amended charge of Non-Aggravated DWI. All of the original charges were dismissed. Her sentenced included the requirement to complete DWI School, perform Community Service, and install an Ignition Interlock Device on her vehicle.
