On December 9, 2022, Deputies encountered a woman and two young boys at a busy intersection in Palm Coast, Florida, where they were soliciting money under the false pretense of funding a funeral for a niece who had allegedly died in France. Although she initially provided multiple false names and claimed it was her first time soliciting, the deputy recognized her from a previous encounter involving the same deceptive story and confronted her with the fact that she was repeating a known scam. After being given multiple opportunities to tell the truth, she was ultimately arrested and charged with Child Neglect, Scheme to Defraud, Obstructing a Highway, and Providing a False Name to Law Enforcement. The Department of Children and Families was subsequently called to take custody of the children until a relative could arrive from Orlando to pick them up.
