At around 1 p.m. on July 23, a shooting occurred near the 2200 block of Colorado Avenue, close to River Bend Drive in Lorain. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Michael Parker, opened fire on two officers as they sat in their police cruisers having lunch. At 12:46 p.m., Officer Peter Gale pulled into the dead end of Riverbend Drive. Six minutes later, at 12:52 p.m., Officer Wagner arrived and parked beside him. The two officers were eating pizza when Michael Parker arrived and immediately opened fire, striking Officer Wagner. Officer Gale managed to drive away to call for help. Between 1:04 p.m. and 1:07 p.m., Parker prepared for additional officers by positioning several rifles on either side of his vehicle. At 1:07:42, Officer Gale returned to the scene with Officer Brent Payne, 47. Seconds later, the windshield of Officer Payne’s cruiser was hit repeatedly as Parker fired 25–30 rounds. Payne got out of his vehicle but was shot while running toward the woods. Even as Parker continued shooting at him for at least 15 seconds, Payne returned fire and radioed updates. Parker also fired at Officer Gale’s cruiser, wounding him. Gale remained inside the vehicle. Soon after, two additional SUVs carrying Lorain officers reached the scene. From cover, they saw Parker near his silver vehicle and opened fire, killing him. The final shot was fired at 1:12:36. Officers then pulled Officer Wagner from his cruiser and transported him to the hospital. He later died from his injuries on July 24 at MetroHealth Medical Center. Officer Gale and Officer Payne survived. Gale underwent hand surgery and is expected to return to duty in a few months. Payne, whose arm was shattered, required multiple surgeries and is not expected to return to police work. Captain Lantz stated the investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine Parker’s motive and intended targets. However, evidence indicates that none of the three officers shot were specifically targeted, and the ambush was not a spontaneous act.
