Bodycam footage captures a chaotic confrontation at Deltona Middle School that escalated from a routine meeting into a violent altercation involving a school resource deputy. Jorge Rivera Rivera and Dagmary Aponte arrived at the school to challenge the arrest of their 11-year-old son, who had been issued a civil citation after an incident with a 10-year-old girl. What began as a discussion quickly spiraled out of control. According to the footage and official reports, tensions rose as Rivera became increasingly aggressive toward Deputy Julia Curtin. After being told to leave, Rivera continued arguing, pointing in the deputy’s face. Moments later, he struck Deputy Curtin, knocking her to the ground. During the struggle, Rivera grabbed the deputy’s Taser before ultimately dropping it when she drew her firearm and ordered compliance. Meanwhile, Aponte also became physically involved, at one point pushing the deputy during the confrontation. Both parents were arrested at the scene. But the events leading up to this confrontation are just as important—and widely disputed. The parents claimed their son acted in self-defense after being hit in the head with a shoe. However, school findings and evidence tell a different story. The investigation determined that the boy became verbally aggressive toward a girl half his size, then shoved her into a wall and forced her to the ground. As she called for help, she threw her flip-flop, which struck his backpack—not his head. Despite this, the parents continued to push a narrative that their son was the victim, even alleging bullying after their own arrests. The school district later found no evidence to support those claims. In court, Rivera faced multiple serious charges, including a first-degree felony that carried the possibility of life in prison. Prosecutors sought a lengthy sentence. However, in a controversial decision, the judge sentenced Rivera to just 45 days in jail and withheld adjudication, meaning he will not be a convicted felon. The courtroom was filled with deputies supporting their colleague, a show of solidarity the judge called “inappropriate,” emphasizing that her decision would be based solely on the evidence. She ultimately ruled that the deputy’s actions contributed to the escalation, describing Rivera’s behavior as an “overreaction” rather than a premeditated attack. Even more controversially, the judge referenced the possibility of bullying—despite no supporting evidence found by the school district. #bodycam #cops #crimestory #crime #pursuit #police 0:00 Intro 3:36 SRO & Parent meeting 7:51 Dad strikes 11:11 What happened 16:30 Mom’s version of events
