For more than a month now, drivers have been charged under Florida’s new Super Speeder law. The law carries strict penalties — including possible jail time — for anyone caught driving 100 miles per hour or faster, or for exceeding the posted speed limit by 50 miles per hour. One of those drivers was a 28-year-old woman stopped by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper after being clocked at 116 miles per hour on the Beachline near Tradeport Drive. She claimed she had received a call that her son had been bitten in the face by a pit bull. The trooper didn’t buy it, and she was taken to jail under the new law. This case is a clear example that the Florida Highway Patrol is serious about enforcing the Super Speeder law — and they do not play around when it comes to reckless driving. Note: Florida’s new Super Speeder law took effect on July 1. Drivers going 50 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit — or driving faster than 100 miles per hour — can now face criminal charges, not just a ticket. A first offense may bring up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine. A second offense within a year could mean up to 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, and even a suspended license. Authorities urge all drivers to slow down and drive responsibly.
