On January 5, 2025, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported vehicle crash involving gunfire near Green Bay Road and Bonnie Brook Lane in Beach Park, Illinois. Two female victims were located inside a crashed vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. A preliminary investigation revealed the victims were fired upon while traveling after leaving North Chicago, when a gray Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat pulled alongside their vehicle and opened fire. What followed was a multi-agency response involving the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Waukegan Police Department, and assisting agencies. The suspect vehicle fled from law enforcement multiple times during attempted traffic stops, leading to a high-speed pursuit across Route 41 and Route 173. The chase ended when the suspect vehicle crashed in a wooded area near Route 173 and Joanna Avenue in Zion, Illinois. Multiple occupants fled on foot, prompting a perimeter search involving K9 units and drones. Two suspects, including Jonathan Garcia, were taken into custody. A firearm and additional weapons were recovered from the crash site and surrounding area. Evidence also included surveillance footage, forensic analysis, and digital evidence extracted during the investigation. Following review of all evidence, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved felony charges against Jonathan Garcia, including aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm. A juvenile co-defendant was also charged. Investigators also believe a third individual may have been operating the suspect vehicle and evaded apprehension. The investigation remains ongoing. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
