Exploring Albuquerque’s infamous “War Zone”—now officially known as the International District—this area became a longtime symbol of violence, drug addiction, and vulnerability. Once dubbed “The War Zone” during the crime surges of the 1990s, it was characterized by open drug markets, rampant gang activity, and visible homelessness . Though the neighborhood was rebranded in 2009 to emphasize its multicultural identity, the scars remain. From 2014–2016, the district—home to about 6.7% of Albuquerque’s population—accounted for 27% of the city’s homicides and an outsized share of aggravated assaults, non-fatal shootings, robberies, and carjackings . This area also sees a disproportionate share of police calls: 13% of the city's dispatches originate here . Meanwhile, the fentanyl crisis has pushed overdose deaths to staggering levels across New Mexico—although the trend is improving somewhat. After peaking in 2021 with 1,029 overdose deaths, the numbers dropped to 997 in 2022 and 948 in 2023. Fentanyl was involved in 65% of overdose deaths in 2023, while methamphetamine accounted for 51% . Homelessness, systemic policing, and societal neglect compound the crisis. In January 2024, Albuquerque counted roughly 2,740 unsheltered individuals—many concentrated in the International District—out of 4,649 across New Mexico . Homeless residents frequently face encampment closures that result in loss of belongings, identification, and medications, stripping away dignity and stability . This video isn’t just about facts—it's a portrait of a place where environment, neglect, and addiction conspire to kill. Welcome to Albuquerque’s “serial killer” that wears down lives, not bodies.
