Please like, comment, and SHARE! 🙏 🔍 Episode Overview: At about 4:45 AM on February 19, 2022, New Jersey State Police Trooper Robert Varga saw a westbound white 2007 Kia Optima swerving between lanes near milepost 1.3 on the Atlantic City Expressway. The Kia struck the center barrier, causing severe front-end damage and deploying its airbags. The crash then led to a second accident involving two other vehicles. Trooper Varga drove to the scene and checked on the people in the other cars. He called for an ambulance. One driver had visible cuts on his face, while the other reported pain. Both were later taken to a hospital for evaluation. After speaking with witnesses from one of the vehicles, Trooper Varga approached the Kia and contacted its driver, 21-year-old Alexis Rosario. She said she had just left work at A'Dam Good Sports Bar & Grill inside the Tropicana Casino. While speaking with Alexis, Trooper Varga smelled alcohol and saw other signs that she might be impaired. Her boss arrived at the crash site but was told to remain in her vehicle. Alexis first denied drinking alcohol that night. She later said she may have unknowingly consumed a drink containing alcohol. Trooper Varga then asked her to complete field sobriety exercises. During the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, or HGN, test, Trooper Varga observed a lack of smooth pursuit, clear and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus before 45 degrees. During the Walk and Turn, Alexis failed to touch heel-to-toe on every step and made an improper turn. She also failed to raise her foot correctly during the One Leg Stand and did not count aloud as instructed. Trooper Varga asked her to recite the alphabet from "B" to "W" and later repeated the HGN test to confirm his observations. The crash involving multiple vehicles, Alexis's signs of impairment, her statement about possibly drinking alcohol, and her poor performance on the sobriety exercises led Trooper Varga to arrest her for driving under the influence. Her Kia was impounded for a required 12-hour hold under John's Law. Trooper Varga first took Alexis to the New Jersey State Police Atlantic City Expressway Station. At the station, officers read Alexis the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators. She agreed to provide breath samples. The results showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.12%, above New Jersey's legal limit of 0.08%. After processing was complete, Alexis was released to Justyna Kuzian while awaiting court, after Kuzian signed the Potential Liability Warning form on her behalf. Alexis received four traffic citations: Operating under the influence (39:4-50) Reckless driving (39:4-96) Careless driving (39:4-97) Traffic on marked lanes - unsafe lane change (39:4-88B) Court records show that Alexis pleaded guilty to operating under the influence on July 26, 2022. She was required to spend 12 hours at an intoxicated driver resource center, use an ignition interlock device for seven months, and pay $740 in fines.
