On January 17, at approximately 1:52 a.m., an officer in an unmarked police vehicle reported that he saw a Honda sedan speeding northbound on Route 29 in Columbia. The officer then followed the car and caught up to it as it was exiting onto Patuxent Freeway, according to the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID). As the officer was driving eastbound on Patuxent Freeway, he turned on his emergency equipment and tried to conduct a traffic stop. The Honda driver didn't stop and attempted to take the exit ramp onto Broken Land Parkway, where the car immediately crashed into a wooded area and then caught fire. Police tried to put out the fire until Howard County Fire and Rescue Services arrived, according to officials. The juvenile driver, who was the Honda's sole occupant, was pronounced dead on the scene.
