It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At around 2:40 AM on January 19, 2024, Officer Michael Turner spotted a black 2009 Ford speeding through River Road near Lydia Drive. The vehicle was going about 60 MPH in a 35 MPH zone. Turner started to follow and pulled the car over at 60th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard East. When he approached, he spoke to the driver, 26-year-old Laiba Shah. She told him she had drunk two drinks at a Brooklyn bar earlier that night. Officer Turner suspected she was intoxicated and asked her to step out of the car for a field sobriety test. Officer Jasmine Erazo and Sergeant Aleksandr Ramadanovic arrived to help. The first test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus. During this test, Officer Turner saw four out of six signs showing she might be impaired. Next, Laiba did the Walk and Turn test. She failed to keep her heel touching her toe and made improper turns. The last test was the One Leg Stand. She couldn’t raise her foot correctly or hold her balance. Because she was speeding excessively, smelled of alcohol, admitted to drinking, and failed the tests, Laiba was placed under arrest for drunk driving. Her car was taken and held for 12 hours under John's Law. She was then taken to the police station for more processing. At the station, she was read the standard statement for drivers. She chose not to give breath samples. Laiba was charged with driving under the influence, refusing a chemical test, reckless driving, careless driving, and operating a vehicle unsafely. 3:05 She smiles so happily.
