Incident: On March 25th, 2026, at approximately 11:47 PM, Sterling Heights Police Officers were dispatched to Van Dyke Avenue and Triangle Drive for reports of a crash involving a SMART bus and a passenger vehicle. Upon arrival, officers discovered a Ford Fusion had rear-ended a SMART bus carrying passengers. The driver of the Ford Fusion was identified as John Chmura, the Chief Judge of Michigan's 37th District Court. During the investigation, officers observed multiple signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, poor balance, bloodshot eyes, and the odor of intoxicants. Judge Chmura initially refused a Preliminary Breath Test but was later arrested based on the officers' observations. He ultimately agreed to take the test, which registered a result of approximately 0.16 percent BAC, twice Michigan's legal limit. A subsequent blood test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of approximately 0.19 percent, resulting in an enhanced charge of Operating While Intoxicated High BAC. Prior to leaving the scene, officers checked on the SMART bus passengers. Two passengers complained of back pain and were evaluated by medical personnel but declined transportation to the hospital. The SMART bus remained drivable, while Judge Chmura's vehicle was impounded. Due to Judge Chmura's long-standing position within the Macomb County court system, the case was reassigned to St. Clair County to ensure impartiality. His next scheduled court hearing is August 17th, 2026. Disclaimer: This content contains real police interactions and may be disturbing to some viewers.
