On September 21, 2026, at approximately 10:00 p.m., officers with the Key West Police Department responded to the area of 202 Duval Street following reports of a serious traffic crash involving multiple vehicles and injuries. When officers arrived, they found three vehicles involved, including a black Toyota SUV overturned onto its driver’s side in the roadway. Bystanders pointed officers toward a man they identified as the driver, later identified as Daniel Garcia. Witnesses told police that Garcia had struck two pedestrians before crashing and had allegedly attempted to leave the scene. Officers detained Garcia while they investigated the incident. The two pedestrians told officers they were crossing Duval Street on a green light when the SUV turned left from Greene Street and struck them, knocking them to the ground. Both reported injuries and received medical assistance from Key West Fire Rescue. According to a witness, the SUV briefly stopped after striking the pedestrians before accelerating south on Duval Street. The driver then allegedly lost control, struck a parked silver Toyota minivan, overturned, and collided with another SUV traveling north on Duval Street. Officers also reviewed surveillance footage from nearby businesses that reportedly captured the collisions. During the investigation, Garcia told an officer that he had turned the corner and did not notice someone walking in front of him. Police subsequently informed Garcia that the investigation had become a hit-and-run investigation and placed him under arrest for hit-and-run and reckless driving. Watch the body cam footage as Key West officers respond to the chaotic crash scene, speak with witnesses and the injured pedestrians, investigate what happened, and make contact with the driver.
