FWC officers conduct a resource check near the 78 Mile Marker in Monroe County, Florida, and what starts as a routine inspection quickly turns into a major lobster bust. According to the police report, officers detained six individuals and recovered 55 total spiny lobsters, with 30 reported undersized. Officers also found a stone crab, an undersized mangrove snapper, and later recovered a speargun after discovering puncture wounds on two of the lobsters. Because of a language barrier, Deputy Rufin responded to assist with translation and identification. After the investigation was completed, three individuals were taken into custody and transported to the Plantation Key Detention Center. This case shows why FWC resource checks are so important in the Florida Keys, especially during closed season and lobster enforcement operations.
