On April 2, 2024, California Highway Patrol Officers in Crescent City California attempted to stop a black 2016 Lincoln MKZ sedan on Highway 101 near the harbor. The Lincoln had a blue light colored license plate light in violation of California vehicle code (VC) 24601. The officers attempted a traffic stop but the driver later identified as Christopher James Swain refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed down Highway 101 south eventually turning onto Sand Mine Road towards Humboldt Road where he continued driving erratically towards Howland Hill Road. Swain attempted the turn at Humboldt Road onto Howland Hill Road and was going too fast, the MKZ left the roadway and rolled into some heavy brush. Following the crash officers immediately approached the crashed MKZ to render aid to the occupants but as they approached the car multiple gunshots came from inside the car prompting the officers to retreat to safety as they called the occupants out of the car. The passenger whose name was not given exited the car and surrendered without further incident, but the driver fired off several more gunshots before fleeing the scene on foot and disappearing into wooded area evading capture.
