On July 14, 2023, New Mexico State Police Officer Jara was patrolling Interstate 25 in Albuquerque when the driver of a white Kia sped past him doing 90 miles-per-hour (MPH). Officer Jara initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, which was being driven by a 47-year-old woman. She admitted to consuming one alcoholic beverage earlier in the evening, so she was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests. After performing poorly on the tests, she was arrested for DUI. She initially refused to provide a breath sample, but after being placed in a holding cell with her phone, she advised Officer Jara that she would provide a sample. The results were not revealed, but she was charged with driving under the influence with a breath alcohol concentration between 0.08 and 0.15%. In addition, to the DUI, she was charged with speeding, failure to maintain traffic lanes, and having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. On January 10, 2024, she pleaded guilty to the DUI charge and the other charges were dismissed. She entered a deferral program where the DUI conviction was eventually dismissed once she completed all court ordered sanctions.
