On March 7, 2026, CHP responded to a solo-vehicle crash on Parkway Drive south of Emily Lane in Del Norte County, California. The driver was traveling southbound on Parkway Drive at a stated speed of 25 miles per hour when the Chevrolet Traverse veered left, crossed over the solid double yellow lines, crossed the northbound lane, left the roadway, went down a steep embankment, and crashed into two trees before coming to rest. The driver was the only occupant and was later contacted at Sutter Coast Hospital. The driver initially said he did not know what happened and could not remember the crash, then later claimed he dropped coffee in his lap and became distracted, causing him to lose control. CHP officers later checked the vehicle and reported finding no evidence of spilled coffee or a coffee cup inside the driver compartment. The report also noted there were no scald marks or redness on the driver’s legs to indicate hot liquid had been spilled. During the investigation, CHP officers reported observing signs of possible drug impairment, including an unsteady gait, droopy eyelids, appearing to be in a stupor, thick and slurred speech, and difficulty forming sentences or expressing thoughts clearly. After the driver was medically cleared at Sutter Coast Hospital, CHP requested the driver perform field sobriety tests, but the driver was unable to perform them as explained and demonstrated. The driver was placed under arrest for 23152(f) CVC — driving under the influence of a drug. The driver consented to a blood sample at Sutter Coast Hospital but later refused to comply with a drug recognition evaluation. The driver was then booked into the Del Norte County Jail on the following charge: 23152(f) CVC — Driving under the influence of a drug. 647(F) - Intoxicated in Public Arresting California Highway Patrol Officers: Officer S.
