On August 8, 2021, Long Beach police officers were alerted to an armed robbery at a Food 4 Less store in nearby Signal Hill. The suspect reportedly fled in a silver Honda Accord, but the vehicle was soon involved in a collision near Pacific Coast Highway and Harbor Avenue. The driver then fled from the crash on foot. Officers responding to the area eventually located Leonides Enriquez nearby and began giving him commands. What initially appeared to be an arrest quickly became a tense confrontation, with officers repeatedly ordering Enriquez to keep his hands visible and comply. The incident was captured on Long Beach Police Department body-worn cameras. The case later continued in court. Enriquez ultimately pleaded no contest to one count of carjacking and one count of robbery and was sentenced to six years in state prison. Enriquez later filed a civil-rights lawsuit against the City of Long Beach and the officers involved, alleging excessive force and other violations. In May 2025, a federal jury found in favor of the officers on the excessive-force claim, and the court entered final judgment for the defendants on May 29, 2025. The court ordered that Enriquez receive nothing from the complaint and closed the case. Separately, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Justice System Integrity Division reviewed the 2021 incident and concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the officers did not act in lawful self-defense.
