Garrett Jay Boyd, 34, was accused of starting multiple fires in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, on April 14, 2026. According to court documents, deputies responded after reports of grass fires in the canyon. Investigators said Boyd was seen near an active fire, then allegedly started another fire nearby before continuing into steep mountain terrain. A Utah National Guard Blackhawk and a Department of Public Safety helicopter helped track him from the air. Officers were eventually hoisted onto the mountain near Boyd, and he was taken into custody before being flown down. Court documents said Boyd allegedly told investigators he had smoked methamphetamine the night before and drank alcohol that morning. He also reportedly said “ancestors” and “spirits” told him to go up the canyon. Boyd was charged with second-degree felony arson and misdemeanor failure to stop at the command of law enforcement. #bodycam #police #truecrime
