-San Diego, CA. -June 04, 2023. A San Diego police officer fatally shot a man who authorities say pointed what looked like a handgun — it was a BB gun — at officers at the San Ysidro Transit Center on Sunday night. The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. at the trolley station on San Ysidro Boulevard, just north of the U.S.-Mexico border. The county Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident under a countywide protocol that tries to ensure that law enforcement agencies don’t investigate shootings by their own officers or deputies. Sheriff’s Lt. Joseph Jarjura said police had received a call about a “disturbance” involving a man on a trolley who had what appeared to be a firearm. The trolley had departed the Iris Avenue Transit Center in Otay Mesa West and was headed to the station near the border. According to scanner traffic, the man had been foaming at the mouth and pacing back and forth, and had not threatened anyone with the weapon. Trolley security at the San Ysidro station spotted the man and reported to police that he was holding a gun in his hand, according to scanner traffic. Trolley security directed police officers to the man when they arrived. Jarjura said police gave the man commands to drop what they believed was a firearm, but he did not comply. Instead he began to “advance” toward officers and pointed the weapon at them. That’s when one officer fired his rifle at the man, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Jarjura said. Officers started CPR on the man, but he died before he could be taken to a hospital. Jarjura said Monday that the man’s identity had not been confirmed. The officer’s name was not released. The weapon turned out to be a BB gun, a replica of a Glock handgun, Jarjura said. The lieutenant said detectives were collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses, several of whom saw the man acting erratically. He added that surveillance video and police body-worn cameras captured the shooting.
