Houston's West Loop was shut down for about eight hours after a police officer and a carjacking suspect were both shot following a pursuit Saturday morning. According to the Houston Police Department, officers were chasing a stolen car around 10 a.m. on I-610 West Loop when the suspect crashed into several vehicles near Chimney Rock. After the crash, the suspect exited his vehicle and opened fire on police officers. HPD Chief Troy Finner said the suspect shot one officer before being shot down by at least three officers who hit the suspect multiple times. Finner posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that one officer and the carjacking suspect were injured in the gunfire and were taken to the hospital. In an update, Finner said the suspect died at the hospital, and the officer is expected to be OK. Finner said the officer's life was saved when a good Samaritan, who previously had a run-in with the law, ran to pull the police officer aside, sparing him from further injuries. Officials reported that the officer, a 29-year-old five-year veteran, suffered one gunshot to the leg and is currently receiving treatment. Eyewitness News spoke with a driver who was caught in the middle of the shooting, saying the suspect tried to steal his car. Lloyd said he got rear-ended on the Southwest Freeway when he was on the way to work. He said the suspect hit his vehicle and tried to carjack him. "He tried to open my door, but my doors were locked," Lloyd said. "It was like a movie."
