In this video, we break down the disturbing DUI arrest of 37-year-old Tonya Mitchell, who was taken into custody after allegedly driving drunk onto school property while dropping off a child at Sebastian River High School in Indian River County, Florida. On the morning of November 18, 2022, Indian River County deputies were called to the school after officials reported an apparently intoxicated woman behind the wheel. When Corporal Macias made contact, he detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from Mitchell’s vehicle. Mitchell admitted she had been drinking earlier and told deputies she entered school property to drop off her niece. During the investigation, Mitchell failed multiple field sobriety tests, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, where officers observed lack of smooth pursuit, sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and onset prior to 45 degrees. When Deputy Rispoli took over, Mitchell appeared unsteady on her feet, had watery, glassy eyes, and was unable to complete the Walk and Turn or One Leg Stand tests. Mitchell later admitted to consuming wine and multiple beers at Earl’s Biker Bar before driving. A breathalyzer test conducted at the Indian River County Jail revealed a BAC of 0.248%, more than three times the legal limit. Due to the presence of a minor passenger, a report was also made to Florida’s Department of Children and Families (DCF) for child endangerment.
