MORRIS, IL - On January 17th, 2020, Morris Police arrived on scene to a driver in a McDonald's drive-thru asleep at the wheel. After repeatedly knocking on the window to awaken the suspect, he was removed from his car and questioned why he was asleep at the wheel. The suspected admitted that he had been drinking earlier in the night at more than one local bar and had consumed 4 - 5 alcoholic beverages. The suspect was transported to a nearby gas station across the street to perform field sobriety tests. For the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the suspect was observed having sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation and was unable to smoothly follow the officer's pen. For the walk-and-turn test, the suspect took 24 steps down and 26 steps back, did not touch heel-to-toe, used his arms for balance, and did not turn as instructed. During the one leg stand test, the suspect claimed that he could not balance in any capacity without placing his hand on the wall. When asked why he was unable to balance, the suspect did not give a reason. Following the field sobriety tests, the suspect was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and illegal transportation of liquor. At the police station, the suspect blew .179% BrAC, which is twice the legal limit to drive in the State of Illinois.
