According to the caller, they were at moose creek and saw a moose calf stranded on a rock. After the calf’s mother was unsuccessful in retrieving the calf, it left the area. The next day, the couple returned to find the calf still stranded on the rock and the cow moose nowhere nearby. They decided to take action, rescuing the calf and bringing it home where officers later met up with them. In the end, Sage was issued a citation for possessing live game without a permit, a non-criminal violation. He pled no contest and was ordered to pay $270 in costs and fines. The calf was transported to the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage for further care. The state of Alaska recommends leaving orphaned animals alone. Wild animals can carry disease or become aggressive and keeping them in captivity before releasing them can spread new diseases to wild populations.
