On July 11th, 2024, Desmond Antoine Rutledge — a seven-year Transportation Security Officer at Miami International Airport — was arrested and charged with organized scheme to defraud and eleven counts of grand theft in the second degree after a Miami-Dade Police integrity sting caught him stealing a GPS-tagged wallet from a decoy passenger's bag at Concourse E. The investigation revealed Rutledge had recruited two younger officers into a coordinated theft operation running since February 2023, targeting more than one hundred bags and stealing an estimated sixty-eight thousand four hundred dollars in cash and valuables from travelers who trusted the checkpoint with their most important belongings, including a nurse whose six hundred dollars was recovered from his truck and a college student whose stolen headphones were found still in their original packaging. Rutledge was sentenced to six years in Florida state prison.
