On February 16, 2024, an employee of fast-food restaurant Del Taco called the Rio Rancho Police Department about a 35-year-old woman who was in the drive thru with an unstrained baby in the car. The Del Taco employee also reported seeing an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. Sgt. Harkness located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Officer Haughney arrived to conduct a Driving While Under the Influence (DWI) investigation. The woman was asked to step out of the vehicle in order to perform standardized field sobriety tests. She was subsequently arrested for DWI and other charges. She was transported to the Rio Rancho police station, where she refused to provide breath samples.
