On March 9, 2023, Whatcom County Sheriff's Deputy James observed a vehicle traveling 50 miles per hours (mph) in a 35-mph zone. He initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and the 18-year-old driver initially admitted to drinking 1 beer. However, there were multiple empty Twisted Tea cans in her vehicle. She refused to submit to standardized field sobriety tests, but was willing to submit to a portable breath test (PBT). The result was 0.239% BAC. She was arrested for DUI and transported to the Whatcom County Jail. At the jail, she submitted to an evidential breath test and the result was 0.220% BAC (or 11 times the legal limit for someone under 21-year-old). She was ultimately charged with DUI.
