Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis said an internal investigation has cleared deputies who were involved in a Nov. 15 shooting near a construction site, according to a video released Thursday. Deputies fired multiple rounds at a truck after the vehicle's driver shot a deputy in the leg, according to the Sheriff's Office. The driver of the truck, 48-year-old Oscar Rene Martinez Munoz, was arrested a short time later. He was charged with three counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a firearm by an illegal alien, according to Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Ryan Flood and online court records. Lewis said his agency's Office of Professional Standards found that the deputies' use of force was justified. He said that the State Law Enforcement Division and the 13th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office are still reviewing the deputies' actions. His comments are included at the end of an 11-minute video that the Sheriff's Office released Thursday regarding events that occurred shortly before 2 a.m. on Nov. 15 at a construction site at 300 Hammett St. in Greenville. The video narrated by Flood includes footage from a deputy's body camera and a surveillance camera at the site. Flood said three deputies were conducting a routine foot patrol of the construction site when they saw a suspicious truck. When deputies approached the truck, it moved forward and then backed up, Flood said. "As the driver approached one of the deputies, he fired one round from a .38-caliber pistol out of the passenger-side window that was rolled down — striking the deputy in the process," Flood said in the video. "The injured deputy and his two partners returned fire at the shooter," Flood said. "However, the shooter was not hit." After shooting at the truck, the deputies urgently tended to their injured colleague, according to the video. "Hey, are you OK?" one deputy asked. "I am hit — in the leg, it's my thigh," responded the injured deputy. The deputies can then be heard summoning medical personnel on their radios. "We need EMS now, EMS now," one deputy said. "We have an officer shot," the other deputy said. Flood said the truck's driver, later identified as Munoz, fired additional shots at deputies before he was arrested a short distance from the construction site. Flood also said that the suspect's loaded pistol was recovered from a grassy area within 20 feet of where he was arrested and several shell casings were collected. The video released Thursday does not identify the deputies involved in the shooting. Munoz charges are still pending, according to online court records.
