On 26 September 2018, King County detectives interviewed Jeremy Shaw and his wife Lorena in two rooms of the Tacoma police headquarters, one wall apart. He was still wearing a jacket that belonged to Steven Morphis, 67, a retired Boeing worker found dead in his own shed six days earlier. This is both recordings, cut in true sync by their own clocks, with the court record beside them. Jeremy Shaw was convicted of premeditated murder in the first degree and arson in April 2022 and sentenced to 548 months; the conviction was affirmed by the Court of Appeals of Washington in September 2023 (State v. Shaw, No. 84062-2-I). Lorena Shaw pleaded guilty to residential burglary, conspiracy to commit theft and rendering criminal assistance; she was never charged with the killing. Everything else — the narration, the two-room instrument, the deed, the list and the maps (USGS NAIP imagery), the record cards and the verdicts — was written and built for this film from the court record and contemporaneous reporting. Documents marked RE-SET are typeset from the record; the presentence statement pages are shown as broadcast by KING 5. Two children are named on the tapes; their names are removed. No music plays under the tape. SOURCES State v.
