In the early hours of September 26, 2024, a small Piper plane lost its engine over the Pacific off Carlsbad, California, turned back toward the coast and made an emergency landing on State Route 76 in Oceanside. The flight instructor and his student, Troy Smith, walked away unhurt, and for half an hour the officers who arrived treated them like the luckiest men in San Diego County. Then a sergeant watched Smith walk to the guardrail and drop a heat-sealed brick from his backpack into the bushes. Police recovered about a kilogram of cocaine and a large amount of cash. A federal complaint later tied Smith to cocaine parcels mailed from North County post offices to North Carolina. The flight instructor was questioned, released and never charged. Smith, a decorated former Marine officer, pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and in May 2025 was sentenced in federal court to 30 months in prison. Federal Bureau of Prisons records list his projected release as February 2027. 00:00 A plane on the highway 00:50 "You guys okay?" 03:38 The flight 05:09 The sergeant arrives 06:44 The drop 10:17 A cartel plane? 12:01 Inside the plane 13:35 Custody 15:46 The flight instructor talks 17:12 The back seat 19:56 The paper trail 20:33 The sentence 22:06 The empty tank 📌 What do you think? Was 30 months the right sentence for a decorated veteran with no record, or should the judge have gone harder?
