A New Jersey State Trooper was seriously injured after a high-risk roadside response involving an alleged wrong-way driver that escalated into a head-on collision. According to reports, emergency services were initially alerted after a vehicle was seen travelling in the wrong direction on a major highway, creating an immediate and serious danger to other road users. As officers responded to intercept and contain the situation, a state trooper positioned their patrol vehicle in an attempt to manage traffic and reduce the risk of a wider collision. During the unfolding incident, the wrong-way vehicle continued along the carriageway and ultimately crashed directly into the marked police unit. The impact resulted in significant damage and left the trooper injured, requiring urgent medical attention. The driver of the vehicle was also injured in the collision and was transported to hospital for treatment. Authorities later identified the driver as 67-year-old Robert Felegi of Middleport, Pennsylvania. He was subsequently arrested and charged with driving under the influence, as well as assault by auto, following the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Law enforcement officials have highlighted the dangers associated with wrong-way driving incidents, particularly when impairment is suspected, noting the extreme risks faced by officers who are often required to position themselves in harm’s way to protect the public and prevent further casualties. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to review evidence and reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
