-Martinez, CA. -August 18, 2023. The Martinez Police Department is releasing audio and video, including body-worn camera footage, from the officer-involved shooting that occurred on August 18, 2023, at 4808 Sunrise Drive in Martinez. At about 3:27 am, the Martinez Police Department received a report of a video alarm at Velvet, a cannabis dispensary, located at 4808 Sunrise Drive. The caller was monitoring a live video feed from the business and said several individuals were attempting to break-in The blue Infiniti involved in this incident had been reported stolen from the City of Livermore on August 12, 2023. A loaded Glock 10mm handgun was located in the front passenger’s area of the vehicle. That gun was purchased in the State of Arizona on January 20, 2023, and is linked to a shooting that occurred on April 27, 2023, in Oakland, Ca. The white Toyota C-HR was also a reported stolen vehicle and recovered in Oakland after fleeing from Velvet. The vehicle was originally taken after a victim was reportedly robbed at knife point and the keys to the car taken. A third vehicle involved, that had also been reported stolen, was abandoned on Sunrise Drive. ——————————— The city of Martinez has released audio and video recordings of police officers shooting two San Francisco men, one fatally, outside a closed cannabis dispensary around 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 18. The shooting resulted in the death of Tahmon Wilson, 20, and injury to his brother Tommy Wilson Jr., 22. The state’s Department of Justice is investigating the incident, citing a state law that directs state investigations when people killed by police are unarmed. Martinez officials said Thursday that they found a loaded gun in the car the Wilsons were in. Police were dispatched to Velvet Dispensary on Sunrise Drive in Martinez after a person called 911 to report an attempted break-in. “Hi. I need a police dispatch for a video verified attempted break-in,” the person told the 911 dispatcher. The caller said the men were just “standing around” and hadn’t gained access to the building. Security footage released by the city from the dispensary’s parking lot shows several young men wearing ski masks with bags in their hand gathering outside the dispensary. The men arrived in two cars, a white Toyota CH-R and a blue Infiniti. When police arrive, the group tries to drive away in the two cars, video shows. Video footage obtained from Officer Cole Bennett shows the Infiniti striking one police car as it moves past the officers — and officers fire their guns. “Shots fired, attempted 245 (assault with a deadly weapon) on an officer,” one officer says in the video footage. The video then shows the officer running down the street to where the Infiniti was stopped, apparently after crashing into a fire hydrant. Officials said the Infiniti had been reported stolen from Livermore on Aug. 12. A loaded gun, purchased in Arizona on Jan. 20, was found near the passenger seat of the car. That gun was also linked to a shooting in Oakland on April 27, according to city officials. The Toyota, which fled the scene, had been reported as stolen and was recovered in Oakland. Authorities said a third vehicle involved in the incident, also stolen, was abandoned on Sunrise Drive. In a video statement, Martinez Mayor Brianne Zorn said the city is working to determine what transpired between the men and officers the night of the shooting. She said there was no timeline for the completion of the investigations by the police department and the state’s Department of Justice. “Watching this footage comes with the tragic realization that a young man has lost his life and a family is grieving,” Zorn said. “We trust that both processes will be thorough, fair and independent. We humbly request your patience while we all await the outcome of these crucial investigations.” In an interview, the brothers’ sister, Jaleace Smith, said they were shot for no reason. “People need to know what happened,” Smith said. “People need to know that my brothers did not try to rob a cannabis place, and (then) got shot by police, because that’s what the story sounds like.” Smith said police questioned Tommy Wilson after he arrived at the hospital for medical treatment and was handcuffed to his bed. He was told the next day he would not be arrested and would face no charges. Martinez Police Commander Greg Hurlbut told the Chronicle last month that the passenger in the vehicle that crashed was not arrested or charged with any crime. Hurlbut said he could not comment on Smith’s version of the events before and after the shooting, due to the state’s ongoing investigation.
