**Leachville, Arkansas** — An Arkansas State Police traffic stop turned into a dangerous pursuit after a suspected impaired commercial driver refused to stop and drove into oncoming traffic at speeds reaching approximately 80 mph. On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, around 7:44 p.m., Trooper Chris Dunham was notified of a hazardous driver traveling on State Highway 18 near Monette. About 10 minutes later, Dunham located a gray tractor-trailer with a white trailer near the Craighead and Mississippi County line and observed the vehicle struggling to maintain its lane. The trooper activated his emergency lights near Leachville, but the driver continued traveling, increasing his speed from approximately 50 mph to 62 mph. About 50 seconds later, the tractor-trailer crossed into oncoming traffic and reached approximately 80 mph while driving directly toward approaching vehicles. According to the report, an oncoming pickup truck was forced onto the shoulder to avoid a collision. The tractor-trailer then corrected its path, entered the center turn lane, and eventually returned to the proper lanes before stopping on the shoulder roughly half a mile later. The driver, identified as Michael Sherman, was taken into custody after approximately 17 commands were given over the patrol car's PA system for him to exit the vehicle. No other occupants were found inside. Trooper Dunham reported detecting the odor of intoxicants, along with slurred speech and an unsteady gait. Sherman submitted to a preliminary breath test, which reportedly showed a 0.12 alcohol reading. Sherman later refused chemical testing at the Mississippi County Sheriff's Office after being advised of his rights, according to the report. Sherman was booked on charges including **felony fleeing, reckless driving, obstructing governmental operations, DWI 1st, refusal to submit to a chemical test involving a CDL, using a commercial vehicle in the commission of a felony, speeding, and improper lane usage.** The incident remains documented as an alleged impaired-driving and dangerous-driving case, and the charges are accusations unless proven otherwise in court.
