A routine traffic stop in Illinois suddenly turns into a dangerous standoff when police encounter a wanted man who appears to be carrying a bomb. What begins with a request to step out of a vehicle quickly becomes a foot chase, a barricade situation, and an hours-long tactical operation. According to the transcript, 39-year-old James Nelson was recognized during a traffic stop involving a Ford Edge with suspected license-plate issues. Nelson reportedly had an active felony warrant for aggravated fleeing and eluding. When the detective attempted to take him into custody, Nelson refused to get out of the vehicle and eventually fled on foot. During the confrontation, officers reported that he had a bomb in his hand. The situation escalated when Nelson ran toward his residence and entered the home. His mother was taken to a safe location while police established a perimeter. The East Central Illinois bomb squad responded and used a robot to clear portions of the residence. Officers later determined that Nelson had barricaded himself inside the attic, leading to the deployment of an emergency response team and a lengthy tactical operation. After hours of searching, officers eventually located Nelson inside the attic. During the arrest, officers reported finding a large pair of scissors and worked to safely remove him from the confined space. Nelson was taken into custody and received medical treatment after the operation. The subsequent search revealed why the situation had been treated so seriously. Investigators recovered the device Nelson had reportedly been carrying, along with a multicolored lighter. According to the transcript, the bomb squad confirmed that the device contained explosive materials and metal projectiles. Officers also discovered a rifle and a red toolbox containing numerous rounds of ammunition in different calibers. The transcript states that Nelson later admitted during a jail call that he had fallen asleep before officers entered the attic. It also states that he ultimately faced charges including possession of an unregistered destructive device, aggravated fleeing and eluding, possession of explosives or incendiary devices, and aggravated battery of a peace officer. According to the transcript, Nelson was ultimately sentenced to 5 years in federal prison followed by 3 years of probation.
