[Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only] Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada — Footage has been released from a 2018 incident involving the Whitecourt, Alta., detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), during which two police officers discharged their firearms at a suspect. The incident began on July 3, 2018, when an off-duty RCMP officer reported the sighting of a purple 1992 Dakota pickup truck, which was a vehicle of interest in a shooting incident at the Valhalla Center, a small hamlet in northern Alberta, the day prior. During a search along Highway 43, RCMP officers located the truck, which was stopped at the Chickadee Creek rest area. Two officers set up spikes strips ahead in case the vehicle fled, while Const. Jessica Brown, Cpl. Randy Stenger, and Const. Ian Paddick drove to the suspect's vehicle and approached on foot. Officers found a man, later identified as Clayton Crawford, appearing to be asleep in the driver's seat. Crawford awoke and, upon seeing the officers through the window, briefly raised his hands before crouching between his legs. Officers began shouting commands as they believed he could be reaching for a weapon. Const. Paddick smashed the driver's side window with a baton and attempted to hold Crawford in his seat. After Const. Brown and Cpl. Stenger managed to open the door, Crawford began to reverse the vehicle. While the vehicle was in motion, both Const. Brown and Cpl. Stenger discharged their firearms at the suspect, later citing fears that Crawford may be attempting to hit them with the vehicle. Crawford then drove off before the truck came to rest in a tree line on the opposite side of the highway. Several hours passed before a specialized RCMP team approached and secured the vehicle. Crawford was then confirmed dead at the scene. In June 2020, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), a civilian oversight agency that investigates serious incidents involving police, announced that two officers, Const. Jessica Brown and Cpl. Randy Stenger, were arrested and charged with one count of criminal negligence causing death. The two officers began their jury trial in Edmonton, Alberta, on November 21, 2022. On December 9, 2022, a 14-person jury found the two officers not guilty.
