A tense encounter between an Oswego County man and law enforcement officers quickly escalated inside a garage in Constantia after he was informed that his young child would be taken from him. “Your mom is coming up to take your son,” Deputy Charles Costello of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office told Miles Dignean. “No, that’s not happening,” Dignean replied, turning away with the child in his arms. Within 20 seconds, what began as a calm explanation turned into a physical confrontation as officers attempted to take Dignean into custody. The situation ended with Dignean being shot, while his young son screamed nearby. On Friday, the New York State Attorney General’s Office released body camera footage capturing the March 21 incident, involving Dignean, Deputies Costello and Corey Whitney, and State Trooper Junyla Sabari. The footage begins around 1 p.m. in the garage at 34 Cook Road. Dignean is seen holding his son as Costello explains there is a court order requiring him to stay away from the child. When officers attempt to remove the boy, Dignean tries to walk past them. Trooper Sabari intervenes, taking the child from his arms, which triggers the physical struggle. Sabari places the child down to assist Whitney, while the toddler, crying, moves toward the altercation. The video shows Sabari drawing her Taser just before Dignean strikes her in the head with an 8-pound steel C-Clamp, measuring 7 inches by 17 inches, according to Lt. Andy Bucher, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office. As Sabari deploys her Taser, the toddler can be seen approaching the fight, arms outstretched, screaming for his father. During the scuffle, Whitney’s body camera falls to the ground, and Sabari’s view is briefly obscured as gunshots are fired. The actual shooting is not clearly captured in either video. After the shots, Sabari retrieves the child and radios in that shots have been fired. She brings the child to a nearby workbench to check on him. Meanwhile, Dignean, lying on the ground, speaks to officers and asks for help standing. Officers inform him he has been shot, and one continues to keep a firearm trained on him. As Dignean moves, deputies warn him to stop or he will be handcuffed. Sabari’s body camera footage ends as the officers begin to handcuff Dignean. Whitney’s footage also cuts off at that moment. All three officers reportedly provided medical aid to Dignean at the scene. He was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:28 p.m., Bucher said. Trooper Sabari was treated for a minor head injury at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. 0:00 - Intro 0:18 - Deputy 1 bodycam 2:41 - Deputy 2 bodycam #OswegoCounty #PoliceBodyCam #MilesDignean #PoliceShooting #BodyCamFootage #AttorneyGeneralInvestigation #PoliceUseOfForce #ChildCustodyIncident #NewYorkNews #ConstantiaNY #LawEnforcement #PoliceEncounter #OfficerInvolvedShooting #PoliceVideo #BreakingNews #UpstateNY #NYPD #OswegoSheriff #StateTrooper #PoliceTakedown #BodyCamRelease #NewsUpdate #PoliceResponse #CourtOrder #MentalHealthCrisis Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
