On February 9, 2025, at around 10:00 a.m., the Sparks Police Department alerted Reno PD about Kupa’a Ke’a, who had assaulted a woman with a firearm earlier that morning, leaving her hospitalized with serious injuries. He was reported to be armed, homicidal, and suicidal. Officers searched the area of 9th and Montello, where they spotted Ke’a’s vehicle. The driver fled north, and officers caught up near Sutro and Wells, attempting a traffic stop. Instead of stopping, Ke’a sped south on Sutro, running red lights and nearly crashing into other vehicles. He drove through the Renown parking lot, back onto Mill Street, and around Pickett Park before re-entering the lot, where he became trapped. Police ordered Ke’a to raise his hands and exit the vehicle, but he ignored their commands and pulled out a gun, prompting officers to open fire. They provided medical aid and found a handgun near his car door.
