In this bodycam footage breakdown, we look at a traffic stop that escalated quickly in Short Hills, New Jersey. An officer was on patrol when an automated license plate reader flagged a white Jeep for having a suspended registration. After initiating the stop, the driver pulled over on the highway shoulder but immediately became irate and argued on his phone that the stop was unlawful. The situation escalated when the driver repeatedly refused to provide his driving documents. He then refused multiple direct orders to step out of the vehicle. The officer eventually had to reach through the open window to unlock the door and drew pepper spray to compel the driver to exit. Even outside the car, the driver resisted being placed in handcuffs and began yelling furiously. Officers also noticed empty baggies with suspected marijuana residue inside the vehicle during the stop. The incident resulted in the vehicle being towed and the driver facing criminal charges. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
