In 2017, Jonathan Todd Schwartz — a partner at GSO Business Management in Los Angeles, California, who served as personal business manager to singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette and other entertainment industry clients — was sentenced in federal court on two counts including wire fraud and filing a false tax return after pleading guilty as part of a cooperation agreement with FBI and IRS investigators who uncovered a multi-year scheme in which he siphoned approximately $4.8 million from Morissette's accounts and nearly $2 million more from additional clients. Schwartz falsified account records to conceal withdrawals, forged at least one client's signature to extract cash, and disguised personal withdrawals as legitimate line items labeled 'construction' within a client's home-renovation ledger, a method that concealed the thefts in plain sight for years. He also filed a false tax return that omitted the stolen funds as income. Judge Dolly M. Gee sentenced Schwartz to six years in federal prison and ordered $8.7 million in restitution, describing the crimes as 'insidious' and 'audacious' and citing the 'grave economic and psychological harm' inflicted on victims whose lives were 'upended' — among them a chart-selling artist who had entrusted the totality of her financial life to the very man quietly emptying it.
