It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At around 2:08 AM on September 14, 2024, Sergeant Joseph Barnicle from the Shrewsbury Police noticed a 2008 Dodge driven without headlights on Broad Street. He pulled the car over near Obre Place. When he approached, the driver was identified as 22-year-old Carly. While talking to her, Sergeant Barnicle smelled alcohol and saw signs she might be impaired. Carly handed over her documents, and he called Patrolman Boehler for help. Suspecting she was drunk, the officer asked Carly to step out of the car to do field sobriety tests. Sergeant Barnicle started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. During it, he saw the eyes not tracking smoothly, jerking at maximum gaze, and jerking started before 45 degrees. Next came the Walk and Turn test. Carly missed steps, touching heel to toe incorrectly and turning the wrong way. The last test was the One Leg Stand. She struggled to keep her foot up and put it down before the test was finished. Because of the alcohol smell and her poor performance on the tests, Sergeant Barnicle arrested Carly for driving under the influence. Her car was towed and held for at least 12 hours under John’s Law. He took her to the police station for processing. At the station, Carly was read the standard driver’s statement. She agreed to give breath samples. Her BAC tested at 0.25%, more than three times the legal limit of 0.08%. After processing, she was released to a sober adult who signed the liability form for her.
