A woman drives a stolen car for months and is finally caught when a license plate reader flags it outside a McDonald’s. "I just kept extending it." On November 4, 2024, deputies located a stolen vehicle parked outside a McDonald's. Inside were a loaded firearm, the driver's adult daughter, and her grandbaby. The driver told deputies the car was a rental she had picked up in Georgia and had simply kept extending for a couple of months. By then the plate had already been entered as stolen out of Georgia, and it flagged the moment it passed a license plate reader. The deputy who made the stop wasn't even there for her. He was handling an unrelated trespass call at the same McDonald's when the alert came through. "Wrong place, wrong time." Towanda Hanks was arrested and charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The vehicle was confirmed stolen out of Georgia and the firearm recovered at the scene was taken into evidence. The passenger was released after the investigation, while authorities documented multiple false statements provided during the stop.
