Lufthansa Flight LH 181 was an ordinary holiday flight until October 13, 1977, when four PFLP terrorists turned it into a six-day nightmare. They rigged the Boeing 737 with plastic explosives, held 86 passengers and crew at gunpoint, and forced a diversion from Rome through Cyprus, Bahrain and Dubai to Mogadishu. As tensions reached breaking point—with hostages beaten, the cabin sweltering without air conditioning, and a ticking time bomb under every seat—Germany’s new elite unit GSG 9 teamed up with SAS advisers to plan the most daring hostage rescue in history. Follow the political wrangling, the coded cigar-packet gambit from Captain Schumann, and the intense rehearsals on a mock-up jet before Operation Fire Magic stormed the aircraft in Somalia. The seven-minute assault that freed every hostage and neutralized the hijackers still serves as the blueprint for special-forces missions worldwide.
