While on patrol, an officer spotted a gray 2020 Nissan Altima with severe front-end damage after it crashed into a gate. The operator attempted to reverse, prompting the officer to activate emergency lights and conduct a stop. When speaking with the operator, the officer observed bloodshot, watery eyes and a strong odor of alcohol. The driver admitted to drinking beforehand and claimed a wrong turn caused the crash. The driver was uninjured and agreed to standard field sobriety tests. During the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the driver showed maximum deviation in both eyes. The driver then struggled through the walk and turn test by starting early, failing to maintain balance, and taking 21 steps without turning. On the one-leg stand, the driver swayed and continually put their foot down. After being transported to headquarters for evidential breath testing, the results showed a BAC over the legal limit. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
