Officers in New Jersey were dispatched after receiving multiple 911 calls regarding an active assault. Upon arrival, police found a large group surrounding a man who had just been involved in a car accident. The group, consisting of family members of the other driver, became increasingly hostile and attempted to attack the man while ignoring orders to move back. As police worked to protect the victim, several individuals began to physically confront the officers. One woman allegedly struck an officer in the face with an open hand and resisted being placed in handcuffs. Two other men reportedly chest-bumped a lieutenant and a sergeant while trying to push past them to reach the victim. Another man who had been told to leave the area returned and struck a lieutenant in the chest during a struggle. The situation required mutual aid from the Nutley Police Department to successfully restore order and complete the arrests. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
