On May 28, 2025, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers assigned to the Truckee Area were conducting speed enforcement on Interstate 80 westbound near the Soda Springs exit in Nevada County, California when an officer observed a black BMW sedan traveling at an extremely high rate of speed and obtained a radar reading of approximately 120 miles per hour in the #1 lane of I-80. Officers attempted to locate the vehicle after it passed their position, but it disappeared. A short time later, 911 dispatch received reports that a BMW had crashed off the roadway near the Soda Springs off-ramp after leaving the highway at a high rate of speed. When CHP officers arrived at the scene, they located the crashed BMW approximately 100 feet down a dirt embankment in heavy vegetation. The driver had exited the vehicle and was contacted by responding officers while emergency personnel evaluated him following the crash. During the investigation, a officer located a bag near the vehicle containing a Glock 19 handgun and multiple high-capacity magazines.
