On April 19, 2023, police were called to a Dollar General after store employees reported suspected theft involving the self-checkout system. Investigators believed a 19-year-old employee had been using an employee access code to manipulate merchandise prices, allegedly reducing items to extremely low amounts—including prices as low as one penny. Store loss-prevention staff provided officers with surveillance footage and transaction information as they worked to determine exactly how the suspected scheme was carried out. As officers examined the evidence, they questioned whether the unusual transactions could have been caused by a technical issue or whether the prices had been deliberately changed. Investigators also learned that the employee had allegedly acknowledged using the code when confronted by store personnel. The investigation eventually led officers to the employee's residence, where she was taken into custody and transported for processing. According to the bodycam transcript, she was ultimately charged with grand theft.
